Hello,  I'm Caroline Oakes

I am a writer/spiritual director/publicist who is fascinated with the shifts in mind and spirit that slowing down and noticing can bring.

I study and follow luminaries of the perennial wisdom that underlies all religions and spiritual traditions  —  I think of spiritual teachers like Thomas Merton and Mary Oliver and Hafiz  and the Desert Mothers and Fathers, and Richard Rohr's Wisdom School  with Cynthia Bourgeault and James Finley. I think of meditation teachers like Sarah Blondin, Keith Kristich and Father Thomas Keating.

So my posts here are day-to-day noticings  — with some occasionally geeky neuroscience stuff added in —  and all transcribed here in this space in hopes of offering a moment to Pause. Notice. Breathe. See Bigger.

Welcome!

A Note About My Essays

My writing has been published by The OnBeing Project (OnBeing.org), the Huffington Post,  the Bucks County Herald, Outlook by the Bay, and other online and print publications.

Since my seminary studies at The General Theological School in NYC, spiritual retreats have been an integral part of my spiritual growth and formation over the years, most especially a theological school conference I was invited to participate in with Thomas Keating  at Holy Cross Monastery (West Park, NY), a Wisdom School retreat with Cynthia Bourgeault  at Kanuga (Hendersonville, NC), the Contemplative Leadership training at Shalem Institute (Washington, DC), the Mindful Schools Mindful Educator teacher training at Garrison Institute, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction training with Jeffrey Harrison at Trinity Church (Solebury, PA), with Quaker teacher Chris Ravndal at Pendle Hill Quaker Retreat Center (Media, PA), and on individual sojourns at the Monastery of the Society of St. John the Evangelist (Boston, MA).

My contemplative practice and my time serving as a spiritual formation director, chaplain associate, seminarian at General Theological Seminary, life-skills prison tutor, parenting educator, sister, friend, wife and mother,  all deeply inform what I bring to my writing.  :)

I am happy and grateful you are here.
